For youth and adults ages 8 and older.

The Salvation Army Red Shield Center School of Music offers a full-service music school for youth and adults ages 8 and older. Young people in the program will learn how to sing, play musical instruments, form a band and, along with performances at the Red Shield Center,display their talents at community and city-wide events like the “Bud Billiken Day” Parade.

Participation in Red Shield School of Music is $5 per person, which allows them to participate in as many of the music programs as they wish!

Musical instruction is provided along the following tracks:

STEEL PAN ORCHESTRA

Instruction is provided on a 10-piece Steel Drum Orchestra. This course is a highly advanced steel pan group that focuses on music fundamentals of percussion, advanced music selections, music theory and instructional leadership for students. A recital will be held at the end of each session to showcase your skills.

Age: 10 and older
Day/Date: Wednesdays and Thursdays
Session 1: January 23 – March 14
Session II: March 27 – May 23
Time: 5:45p.m.-7:00p.m.
Fee: $5 (includes all music classes)
Min/Max: 3-10 musicians

BRASS BAND

Instruction is provided on trumpet, trombone and baritone horn. This intermediate course focuses on the fundamentals of brass performance,
music theory and instructional leadership for students. Mostly traditional style classical and church hymns are played. A recital will be held at the end of each session to showcase your skills. Some music knowledge is required.

Age: 8 and older

Time: 4:30p.m.-5:45p.m.
Fee: $5 for one session or $10 for both sessions
Min/Max: 3-12 musicians

SENIOR PIANO (NEW)

This is a beginner’s class for seniors to learn the fundamental aspects of basic piano, basic chord inversion and progressions and easy pieces from classical piano literature. A recital will be held at the end of each session to showcase your skills.
Age: 55+
Day/Date: Tuesdays
Session I: January 22-March 12
Session II: March 26-May 21
Time: 1:00p.m.-2:00p.m.
Fee: $20 for one session or $35 for both sessions
Min/Max: 3-6 musicians

PRIVATE LESSONS

Each lesson will include 30 minutes of one-on-one instruction on musical information and technique, such as note accuracy, breathing and pitch. Lessons are available for trumpet, trombone, baritone horn, piano and steel pan. A recital will be held at the end of each session to display learned skills.

Session II: April 9-May 24

Fee: $50 per 8-week session or $75 for two 8-week sessions
(Free for students enrolled in another music class)
